That evening, after the conference, several of the participants who already knew each other, women in their twenties and thirties, including Monica and her new friend, gather at the Pakaly Bar, on a pedestrian street lined with restaurants and bars, a couple of blocks from the Hotel Isabel.

The evening goes by in a spirit of friendship, with laughter, drinking, and sharing stories from each other’s countries. The sense of humour of the Indigenous peoples of the south is just as sharp as in the north, Monica thinks several times. It’s maybe even more absurd. She feels understood; these new friends can read her like an open book. The boisterous laughter mixes seamlessly with the lively noises from the street as the hours pass.

It all makes Monica acutely aware of the absence of Katherine. Katherine, who so quickly became her best friend. She would have liked to share this moment with her.

Between two sips of beer, Monica recalls their dreadful argument in the hotel room in Vancouver. It was the last day of their stay. They had celebrated the end of the trip and the invitation Monica had just received after a panel where she had spoken a few times, which would have her head to Mexico almost immediately after their return to Québec. They had toasted the Monica World Tour with round after round of shooters.
